Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is a brain injury that occurs due to abnormal brain development or damage that occurs while the brain is still developing.
About the Condition
Causes of Cerebral Palsy
It most commonly occurs during pregnancy or delivery and is often caused by reduced oxygen to the brain. Typically, the damage that occurs affects pathways in the brain related to movement and muscle control. As in all brain injuries, symptoms may vary.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms of cerebral palsy may include poor coordination, poor balance, abnormal gait, stiff muscles, weak muscles and tremors. It can also affect vision, hearing, swallowing, speaking, sensation and cognitive abilities.
How We Can Help You at CIN
Currently, no cure exists for Cerebral Palsy. Even with damage that dates back to pregnancy, there is still hope for improvement. The brain has a unique ability to rewire and strengthen connections when given the proper input. At Colorado Integrative Neurology, once we have completed a comprehensive evaluation, we will be able to create a customized neurological rehabilitation plan to help repair and strengthen the damaged pathways. The exercises prescribed are designed to improve connectivity and efficiency in the areas of the brain that were damaged.
